Gentlemen I bring you tidings of great joy.
Orgasmic joy.
It has come to my attention that on the weekend of September 22nd and 23rd there are two very awesome concerts on both of those days. Friday the 22nd in Cincinnati at Bogart’s music venue (the place me and San saw Opeth and Dark Tranquility) DRAGONFORCE will be playing live.
Needless to say this is newsworthy, but I’ve just started.
DragonForce are one of the best power metal bands around and have made one of the biggest splashes in the market this past year. Formed in 1999 DragonForce is the brainchild of THE GREATEST ASIAN EVER; Hermon Li. Their lyrical themes include swords, sorcery, fire, and epic battles. Stephen would love to hear that in fact that their earlier lyrics were heavily influenced by the Sega game “Wonderboy In Monster World”.
If this not enough to convince you that this will be a worthwhile trip, its not just about the righteous music, its about avenging Sanich’s and my own first chance to see them at Ozzfest this summer, which was taken away by Ian.
But why would I mention the 23rd? Because that evening starting at 4:30 GIGANTOUR is in Columbus, Ohio, and we’re going. Gigantour is like Ozzfest, only its better. SO MUCH BETTER. Gigantour is headed by Megadeth every year, who are so awesome and important to heavy metal history I’ll have to devote an entire article to them at a later time to do them justice. This year’s supporting acts are even more glorious then last years as Opeth, Lamb of God, and Arch Enemy are sharing first stage. Not to mention Overkill, Into Eternity, and the Smash Up in second stage.
Opeth in my opinion the best band of the weekend, think of them as Pink Floyd was in the 70’s and 80’s, while many great rock acts were pushing the hard rock sound like Led Zeppelin and Iron Butterfly, Pink Floyd had concept albums, extremely complex and 6+ minuet songs. Opeth is much like that with modern death metal, they have long complex songs with a high level of technical proficiency, they are breaking the mold and becoming famous at the same time. Part of this is due to the influence of one of the greatest musical minds ever; Steven Wilson. Wilson’s main band is Porcupine Tree, a progressive rock outfit, he works in the slow ambience of No Man, and the simple acoustic melody’s of Blackfield. Wilson also has produced 3 of Opeth’s albums, making him somewhat of a modern day Bob Ezrin.
I’m not as familiar with the background of Lamb of God, Overkill, or The Smash Up but I do know that they are awesome.
Arch Enemy is a fantastic melodic death metal band fronted by Angela Gossow. You heard me, one of the best voices in death metal is a woman, and she kicks major ass.
In conclusion we MUST attend these back to back concerts of righteousness. What Would Satan Do?
UPDATE!
I have recently discovered that opening for DragonForce will be the hilarious nintendocore band HORSE The Band and the so-so psuedo death metal band All That Remains.
