Here's a list I compiled of my favorite vocalists about a year ago, I may take some time later and update it if anything has changed much.
1) Ilaria Graziano- She has done tons of work with Yoko Kanno, especially on the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alont Complex Oiriginal Sound Track. She has hands down the most beautiful voice I've ever heard in my entire life.
2) Derek "Fish" Dick of Marillion (first four albums)- Just blatently a great showman, his voice is the spirit of early Marillion and has yet to be equaled (Steve Rothery is great too, but he just can't sing old Marillion style songs right)
3) Tarja Turunen- Tarja is in my opinion the most important component to Nightwish's over all sound and recognizability.
4) Rob Halford- If you ever have seen Judas Priest live you know exactly what I'm talking about. Not only is he a fantastic showman but his voice is forever tied to Judas Priest (begining to see a trend here). His honesty to the world about being gay also win points in my book.
5) James Labrie of Dream Theater- He's just a blatently a good vocalist. I've heard him sing with such variety over the years with Dream Theater its hard to imagine Dream Theater without him! (then I listen to "when Dream and Day Unite" and realize that there was a Dream Theater before James)
6) Angela Gossow- You might not have heard of her or Arch Enemy, but you should. I remember my first incounter with this of Death Metal fondly. I heard the song "we will rise" on "Metal For the Masses Vol.2" at the mall and enjoyed the song very much.(being one of the 3 or 4 of the decent bands on that compelation) About a month later I played the CD for my friend, he then promtly told me that the coolest death metal vocals' I'd heard since early Amorphis was sung by a WOMAN. WHAOH! This was news. I can only think of one other woman who sings death metal that well and she sucks anyway tongue.gif. So hats off to Angela (even have passes to see her backstage on July 31! Go me!)
7) Vorphalack of Samael- What started as Black Metal band back in 1990 spawned the Elektro-Industrial behemoth Samael. Vorph's voice is EXTREMELY easily to identify and is one of the most origional sounding voices in music today.
8) Anneke van Giersbergen of The Gathering- Easily the coolest thing to ever come out of the Netherlands, her voice is fantastic, beautiful and many other adjectives. Despite her bands underground sucess she still holds her dayjob at a bakery.
9) Sarah Brightman- Anyone here fans of the origional cast recording of Phantom Of the Opera? Well thats Sarah Brightman for you! A completly moving and and angelic voice with a wide discography.
10) Johan Edlund of Tiamat- DEEPEST VOICE EVER. He's also bald and creppy looking, but still a fantastic vocalist, I've never heard anyone else sing like him.
11) Ayumi Hamasaki- My personal favorite Jpop vocalist with good looks to boot!
12) Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis- Still a teenager when he joined Amorphis back in the early 90's he is my personal favorite death metal vocalist.
13) Heino- Unlucky 13th place goes to the highly unde - German folk vocalist HEINO!
